Back in college when I was working with kids but did not have any of my own, I was aware of "Thomas & Friends." It seemed cute, and the kids I worked with sure loved the toy trains. Now that I have one of my own who enjoys watching the show and playing with the trains, I have come to the conclusion that it is one of the worst kids shows on tv. And it's not just me, my husband, father, mother, and best friend agree.

First I could not get over how mind numbingly boring it is. Once I broke through that, I realized it taught horrible lessons to kids. And that the leader, Sir Topham Hatt, is just one brutal dictator. Really, his name should go down on a list of worst television bosses ever. In one episode he tells Thomas not to do take some trains with him to a new island they'd found, even though those trains knew the layout of the island, and sure enough when Thomas messed up because he didn't know the layout, he shamed Thomas...even though he didn't take those trains because Sir Topham Hatt told him to!

And every time he brays, "I thought you were a really useful engine!" I just want to punch him! The engines are all so scared of getting on his bad side they make stupid decisions. Andy says watching the show makes him biased against AI.

Are we the only ones who see Sir Topham Hatt as a brutal dictator? Is there something extremely subversive going on that I'm missing? Is there ever an episode of Thomas where the trains wake up and rebel against Sir Topham Hatt (I'd like to see that one!) At any rate, it looks like I'm not the only one who noticed.

I have a working theory that Sir Topham Hatt is a necromancer and all the trains are demons he's bound to material form, to serve his whims for 1,000 years or some nonsense. I'm sure that guy gets up to some weird shit when the cameras are off. ;p

I could see that, I really could. Heehee, someone needs to write that out as a story!

I must admit that I've rarely seen the show and that I found it disturbing, but never quite pinned down why. Now I know :) Let's storm the Bastille, shall we?

Happy to be educational! And since I have nothing better to do today, we shall!
